New Decade, New You1/6/2010

Happy new year to you all. Hope you had a good christmas. Now it is back to the hard work to get back in shape. The last 3 months have flown past. Since the last blog I have been on various courses to learn what's new and relevant to fitness for 2010. Most importantly of all, I decided to revisit my pilates training. I did my first course back in the 1990's but didn't feel passionate enough at the time to spend much time on it. I have, however always applied some pilates based moves into my aerobics and conditioning classes ever since. In October I went to Nottingham for a 3 day intensive Advanced pilates course. I didn't realise that this was cutting edge new pilates and now feel honoured to be one of only 39 instructors in the country to have got through. I am very excited to add this to my repertoire of specialist training for clients. Also this year, I feel that the only way people can achieve their personal fitness goals is to work out with family or friends and I will be encouraging you all to find a friend to help you through the times when it is hard going. Good luck.

Oh no it's September!9/3/2009

I hope you all had a great summer. It whizzed past. No sooner had the children broken up for the holidays we went to Rhodes with 42 degrees of wonderful heat. The exercise classes have been packed constantly which is amazing. My clients had, thankfully, all gone on holiday at roughly the same time and it has been fun getting them ready for the beach. Well done to Phil for losing 20 lbs in time for his holiday. Watch out Daniel Craig! Well done to Kay for losing 7 stone since last year. What a fantastic achievement. Good luck to Yvonne for just starting to get fit for her Macchu Picchu trip in October. You can do it! Well done to Jackie who constantly amazes me with her energy by running every day with her dog at 6am in the morning and 14-15 miles every weekend. You are all so awesome thank you for your commitment to training especially if I haven't mentioned you!!

What's Happening7/3/2009

Just recently, I have been very lucky to have been involved with the 5km "Race for life" held at Ardingly. Fran, Sarah and myself did the warm-up on stage in front of 2000 wonderful people and as ever it was a fabulously inspiring experience to feel such warmth and cameradery on that hot Sunday. This is the second year we have been asked to do this and this year I ran it with my 2 daughter's. There were all ages, shapes and sizes either walking or running. Lots of people were dressed in all sorts of costumes. We just have to collect our sponsor money now!

I have been asked to do the warm up for the St. Peter and James's Hospice sleep walk on Saturday. It starts at the Olympos Leisure Centre, Haywards Heath at midnight and when I spoke to Karen, who is the events lady from the hospice, she said that more than 700 women had signed up to do the walk so far. What a wonderful evening that will be. Fran and Sarah are also with me for the warm-up. It is Sarah's birthday the following day so we may well have a glass of champagne to celebrate!

Thought Of The Day7/2/2009

I have been very interested to watch the GMTV bikini diet that they have introduced recently. It has been great to see so many people being inspired to lose weight for summer. Is it me or does the fitness instructor look terribly false and totally "barbie"? How thin and orange she is. Her look is totally unachievable and it irritates me so much to see that the television producers still need this kind of look for their show.

Thought Of The Day7/1/2009

How many calories do you have to burn to lose 1lb of fat? Unfortunately It takes 3500 calories to burn 1lb of fat. It sounds like an uphill task but if you try to reduce your calorie intake by just 500 a day, at the end of the week it adds up to 3500 - Hurray! It is as easy as that!

Try to reduce your carbohydrates I.e bread, pasta, potatoes.

Also, have a look at your portion sizes. Can you reduce the amount on your plate? Can you leave food on your plate? If you don't feel hungry then maybe you could have smaller portions.

If you have children you have to make their food interesting and fun but try not to eat their left-overs at tea-time!

Try not to eat too late in the evening and try to eat protein only if possible. Fish, chicken, meat and vegetables, are perfect.

There is new research out that is telling us not to eat raw after 4pm. It apparently slows your metabolism down and our bodies are not efficient in breaking them down as we go into the evening.

The bottom line is to eat sensibily. We all know what is good and bad for us.
